On Commencement Addresses

Another year, another group of university commencement addresses fraught with liberal ideology. Maybe I’m just used to disagreeing with outspoken liberals and are thereby not as offended by a liberal’s presence as a liberal is by a conservative’s presence on a public stage, but wouldn’t it be great to have some alternative commencement voices? Well, sure, the speaker might get booed, which would rightfully reflect poorly on the school and its graduating class, but isn’t at least part of the point of a graduation address to spur graduates into action, to inspire them forth into greatness?
Jodie Foster spoke at my graduation. Sure, there were a few groan-worthy moments, but on the whole the speech was neutral. I remember she told us all that upon graduation, we’re all given 2×4’s. It’s up to us whether we want to build something or hit someone over the head with it. Sure, it’s not poetry, but it’s better than sitting through some two-bit speaker relishing in his or her own fifteen minutes of fame.
I don’t think we’re ready for a politically diverse set of U.S. graduation ceremonies. I mean, I’m ready, but I don’t think academic institutions are ready. For that to happen, the institutions themselves would have to be politically diverse, and that’s not going to happen anytime soon. Until then, we’ll all just be stuck rolling our eyes through one liberal commencement speech after another.
