Dear CBS ‘Evening News’: Way to be out of touch. From NewsBusters:

According to Gloucester Public Schools Superintendent Christopher Farmer, the girls did it to gain status. CBS correspondent Michelle Miller took it a step further and made an economic connection.

“Status in Gloucester is hard to come by,” Miller said. “The once-thriving fishing community has seen jobs drift overseas. Economic depression has left many teens trying to fill the void.

I’ve got a radical, novel idea for Michelle Miller, CBS and the parents of Gloucester: Instead of talking to adults to try to figure out why your children are misbehaving, take some time from your ‘busy’, vapid lives and actually talk to your children. Spend some time with them. Suspend your yelling hysterics and listen to what they have to say, because clearly your method of parenting hasn’t worked. I’m fairly positive the girls who made the pregnancy pact weren’t thinking about the economy when they did the deed that knocked them up. It’s your job as parents to find out what they were thinking about, and why 17 girls, all under the age of 16, wanted to bring another life into the world to improve their own lives. Only then–after you’ve heard their motivations straight from their mouths, not from uninformed adults–can you begin to rebuild your family.
