22-year old Marine Sergeant Merlin German died on April 11, three years after an Iraq roadside bomb exploded and burned 97 percent of his body. He was not expected to live after the February 21, 2005 blast, but bravely battled his injuries for over three years. After over 40 surgeries that left his face scarred, cost German his fingers and forced him to learn how to walk again, German’s positive attitude and unimaginable determination earned him the nickname “Miracle Man”. He began a charity called Merlin’s Miracles, which helped burned children and their families take vacations and special outings to make life easier.
Sergeant German was a turret gunner who found 8 IEDs without anyone sustaining injuries–all within the first six months of his deployment. German was stationed in Camp Pendleton. Per Governor Schwarzenegger, state Capitol’s flags were flown at half-staff in German’s honor.
May Sgt. German rest in pain-free peace, and may his heroism and service always be remembered. The Merlin’s Miracles site is here.
