Reading Beyond ‘Boy’: Obama on Nukes

Let’s take a closer look at the remarks from U.S. Rep Geoff Davis that liberals have been harping on all morning. Via The Astute Bloggers, here’s the original text:
We read:
“U.S. Rep. Geoff Davis, a Hebron Republican, compared Obama and his message for change similar to a “snake oil salesman.” He said in his remarks at the GOP dinner that he also recently participated in a “highly classified, national security simulation” with Obama.
“I’m going to tell you something: That boy’s finger does not need to be on the button,” Davis said. “He could not make a decision in that simulation that related to a nuclear threat to this country.”
Big uproar on the Left about that, of course (e.g here). In many countries “boy” is undoubtedly a traditional term for a male servant of any age but I would have thought it clear that Davis was referring to the immature level of Obama’s behavior.
Predictably, both liberals and conservatives have focused on ‘boy’ in that commentary. It’s the final sentence, however, that should hold more weight.
In a simulation of a nuclear terror threat, Obama could not make a decision. Davis didn’t say that Obama didn’t make a decision, or that maybe he made a decision but it was one that Davis disagreed with. No. Davis said that Obama could not make a decision.
It’s not as if a nuclear threat is a nonissue. Political bloggers have beat that horse to death. Wouldn’t you think that the potential Democratic nominee for the presidential campaign has at least pondered what he’d do if faced with the threat of his country’s extinction?
I know the liberal answer to this question. There’s lots of other external considerations, we can’t just push buttons and obliterate cultures, etc.
And my conservative rebuttal to that unasked question is this:
What other presidential nominee has been endorsed by the Hamas? From MY Vast Right Wing Conspiracy:
… the Hamas terrorist organization has expressed the “hope” that Senator Barack Hussein Obama will win the presidential elections and change America’s foreign policy.
Even though Obama has said that he would not meet with Hamas unless it renounces violence and recognizes Israel, or becomes the recognized leadership of the Palestinians — he has no qualms about holding talks with the leadership of Iran, Syria, and North Korea — that doesn’t seem to bother the Hamas leadership.
“We like Mr. Obama, and we hope that he will win the elections,” Ahmed Yousuf, Hamas’ top political adviser in the Gaza Strip, said in an exclusive interview with World Net Daily and with the John Batchelor Show on WABC Radio in New York.
He saw Obama’s comments about Hamas as political posturing that was understandable to lull supporters of Israel before the election.
“I understand American politics and this is the season for elections and everybody tries to sound like he’s a friend of the Israelis,” he said. All that would change if Obama would get elected. “I hope Mr. Obama and the Democrats will change the political discourse….
